Aug 09, 2015 Looking for Magellan I Dobsonian Installation Instructions - posted in Meade Computerized Telescopes: I am looking for a copy of the Meade Magellan I #2010 Dobsonian.
I recently purchased a Meade Magellan 1 Telescope Computer System. Everything appears to be set up correctly but I am having problems with the encoders. On page 3 of the users guide is says that to confirm that the encoders are activated and recording the telescope's motion, see if the telescope's coordinates change as the telescope is moved.
I put the computer in the Coordinate Mode and the numbers only fluctuate slightly if at all. The 'raw' coordinates do not appear to be working. Should these numbers be changing or am I missing something? I can't seem to aligned the telescope in order to make it work. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- John Clark 19-99 Linwell Road St.

Maybe I can help you. Are the encoder shafts turning with the unit? Probably best seen on the Dec rotation.
What scope did you install this to? Make sure all connectors are pushed home. Have you tried to talk to Meade? Ha Ha, that's a joke!
I was wanting info from them and made 9 calls to them and there damn phony phone system routed me right out of the company and when I finally got a human on the phone he didn't know diddly squat. So much for help from them!! The readout should show change in that mode, I'm thinking.

Check encoder count output versus your setting circles outputs, 4096 (?I think?) counts equals 360 degrees (for Dec) equals 24 hours (for RA). When I did this, I found slipping in one shaft, and it was not too hard to correct.
Look for systematic error, e.g. Better readings (less slipping) in one direction, etc. This test can be done easiest during daytime. I had the same problem with mine at first. What I think is happening is that one or both of the encoders may not be making complete contact at all times with the shaft. A friend of mine discovered this on mine and took it apart, and superglued it to the shaft. That did the trick for mine, but if it will work for you. You should get a lot of change in the numbers when you move it.
Focus on one object in the distance during the daylight. Note the numbers it has for altitude and azimuth. Move the scope around a bit then using the numbers go back to your object, if the encoders are not moving then the numbers should match up and you should have your object in the center.
