For those not currently using AutoCADĀ®, SoftPlan is the clear choice based on how easy SoftPlan is to learn. Many current SoftPlan users who used AutoCAD. Does anyone have any experience using Softplan? If so what do yo use it for? I work for a residental builder and currently use Autocad Arch. Desktop 2006 and i feel.

I am new to Revit, i am familiar with chief and softplan and have been using chief for awhile. I know that autodesk makes some of the best cad software, but i am wondering if Revit is worth the money and learning curve.

I have read a lot of messages on the news group here, and it seems like it might be difficult to learn. I have been working on the demo for about 4 days now and it is a bit overwhelming. I found some tutorials on autodesk about it and am trying to make my way thru it. I know that Y'all will have a Bias opinion, but your input will be appreciated. Revit Newbee. From what i have seen of Revit, it works kinda of like Chief Architect, you draw using walls, windows, doors, it makes roofs automatically, it has cabinet libraries that all you have to do is point and click where you want them and all of the things can be changed to fit the parameters you need. In Chief I can complete a full set of drawings to build from and get permits, for a 3000 sq ft home two level with basement, in about 16 hours. I cna set down with a customer and draw the home setting in their living room and get a good rough design that they can see what the home will look like with 3D rendering in under and hour. I am getting into more complex designs and small commrcial high-rises such as a 7 story building, It seems like that there is nothing that you cannot manipulate to get parameters that you need in Revit, but it just has so much that i am wondering what the learning curve is, and if it is worth it. Go to Chief architect and they have a full working except saving and printing demo that you can download and use to check it out. As a small business home builder and designer and architect Chief has worked pretty good, but i am getting into more complex things.

Good luck and enjoy. My opinion is that Revit (especially Revit Series -bundled with ACAD) is worth every penny. Revit's ability to let you work in 3D or 2D on a model that contains every view (plans, elevations, sections) as opposed to having a whole whack of separate files gives you tremendous power, clarity and speed.

Revit imports and exports dwgs all day.bundled with ACAD it gives you a world of versatility to perform minor (or major) changes to dwgs you're importing or exporting. It renders, it does AVI walk-thrus, and there's all kinds of learning resources available on line.some in video format, some for free. Bottom line is that Autodesk products are used by possibly 95% of architects in NA, and with BIM software becoming a requisite to pre-qualify for a growing number of state, municipal and county-funded projects in the US, and Canada likely to follow.why would you consider anything else?
