Hi, I run a small website but have about 40gb of audio talks on the site that are getting pretty popular. They are really sucking up my bandwidth and need a new way of distributing them. I put the all on emule with links to the files but not many of my users know what emule even is. I am now trying to make a bittorrent tracker with php but am not having much luck with it.

There is practically no info on the net that i can find that shows how it works. I have found some php scripts that work reasonably well but would rather my own home brew front end.

Any links or info would be great. Onemind writes. I have found some php scripts that work reasonably well but would rather my own home brew front end.

You only need to provide the users the.torrent file, you dont have to even let them see anything to do with the tracker. You could submit torrents to an allready established tracker and let them sort it out, and just link your users straight to the torrent in question. With BitTorrent you need to remember that the server doesnt distribute the files(well some trackers can, but not many and i dont know any off the top of my head), You need 'seeders' who have the file to send it to others.

Someone else can help you out alot more i'm sure. Thanks guys, A few more questions while i'm at it:-) You know how you said that i dont need to host the files, wouldn't i need to be the original seeder in order for other people to get the file? And wouldn't this involve just hosting all the files to start with then its distrobution would get split up more and more as people started sharing the file amongst themselves? So how would this basically work? Would i just have all my files on the server, create each files.torrent file then upload that torrent file to a public tracker? This brings me to the question, what exactly is a tracker? Does it just let you know how many seeders and other d/l stats from the file and is it absolutely neccesary?

If i just hosted a file, made a torrent file the hosted that, the made a html link to that file, would it still be sharing the file via bittorrent or is a tracker needed to make it work. Sorry if that was confusing:) Still trying to get my head around how torrents work. Thanks again, Cheers. Wouldn't i need to be the original seeder in order for other people to get the file?
