When one considers just how different Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, and the Grateful Dead sounded, it becomes obvious just how much it was encouraged. In the mid-’90s, an album as eclectic as Abraxas would be considered a marketing exec’s worst nightmare. But at the dawn of the 1970s, this unorthodox mix of rock, jazz, salsa, and blues proved quite successful. Whether adding rock elements to salsa king Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va,” embracing instrumental jazz-rock on “Incident at Neshabur” and “Samba Pa Ti,” or tackling moody blues-rock on Fleetwood Mac’s “Black Magic Woman,” the band keeps things unpredictable yet cohesive.

Many of the Santana albums that came out in the ’70s are worth acquiring, but for novices, Abraxas is an excellent place to start. 31Jul/17 Santana – Abraxas (1970) [Japanese SACD 2001 #SRGS 4583] PS3 Rip ISO SACD DSD64 2.0 >1-bit/2.8224 MHz 50:36 minutes Scans included 2,07 GB or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz Scans included 1,01 GB Features the 1998 Remastering on SACD format Genre: Rock The San Francisco Bay Area rock scene of the late ’60s was one that encouraged radical experimentation and discouraged the type of mindless conformity that’s often plagued corporate rock. But frankly I bought this disc because it was was cheap and it reduced my shipping fees in an order from Japan. As it turns out, it was the most exciting disc of the purchase (although I rather enjoyed the Boehm Mozart Requiem too)! 30Jul/17 Robert Lockwood Jr. – Delta Crossroads (2000) PS3 Rip SACD ISO DST64 2.0 & 5.1 >1-bit/2.8224 MHz 60:33 minutes Covers included 3,59 GB or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz Covers included 1,08 GB Features Stereo & Multichannel Surround sound Telarc SACD-83509 Genre: Blues For Delta Crossroads, Robert Lockwood Jr., a former student of Robert Johnson, returns to his Delta blues roots. It is rather strange hearing old Delta blues sung by one of its originals on a modern recording.
