It turns out that this player will happily switch modes to whatever the current driver is looking for.
So with the player attached, just go to Device Manager, to 'GPX audio player', to the 'Driver' tab, and the 'Update driver' button. Choose 'Specific Location' on this screen, and 'Manually Choose' on the next. There should be two drivers listed here, 'MTP Device' and 'USB mass storage device', choose the 'USB mass storage device'. If it complains, tell it yes, I want to install it anyway.
